About This Coffee:
Sourced from smallholder farmers in the remote Bukhanakwa community on Mount Elgon, Uganda, this fully washed coffee offers vibrant flavors of peach, red apple, lemon, and raspberry. Grown at altitudes of 1950-2100 masl, these beans benefit from the region’s rich volcanic soils and ideal climate, producing a complex and distinctive cup.
The Bukhanakwa farmers work with Zukuka Bora Coffee Company, a project that supports local communities through social initiatives. Profits from this coffee help fund projects run by their partner NGO, JENGA Community Development, which provides education, clean water, and health services to the people of Mt Elgon. This coffee doesn’t just taste good—it does good.
The Region and Its History:
Mount Elgon, an ancient and extinct volcano, provides the perfect terroir for coffee cultivation with its high altitudes, volcanic soil, and ample sunshine. While coffee farming in the region dates back to the 1920s, Bukhanakwa’s specialty coffee production is a relatively recent development, driven by the Zukuka Bora project. The farmers here are paid fairly and production has steadily increased as the community embraces quality-driven methods.
The Coffee Process:
The fully washed process begins with selective harvesting of ripe cherries, which are floated in water to separate out the lower-quality beans. The best cherries are then pulped and dried on raised beds for around 21 days. After drying, the coffee is rested before being hulled, sorted, and bagged for export, ensuring only the finest beans reach your cup.
